Clients not showing up on WSUS server (Logs included)
(too old to reply)

Hi,

I have been racking my brain for three days now. I've researched this and
other self help sites
and am at my wits end.

On a test 2003 server I've installed WSUS per instructions. I have tried
both AD clients and
stand alone clients but they do not show up on the WSUS server console.
Below are Update
logs from a stand alone client and what I think is the matching entry from
the servers log.

Any help would be appreciated.

This is thee most common problem ever, and should be documented more properly.

The easiest solution is that you need to to go onto the pc's that are not
showing up and go to this address in IE:

http://update.microsoft.com/microsoftupdate

This will force the pc's to download the latest version of the WSUS client.

This is thee most common problem ever, and should be documented more properly.
The easiest solution is that you need to to go onto the pc's that are not
http://update.microsoft.com/microsoftupdate
This will force the pc's to download the latest version of the WSUS client.

Hi,
I have been racking my brain for three days now. I've researched this and
other self help sites
and am at my wits end.
On a test 2003 server I've installed WSUS per instructions. I have tried
both AD clients and
stand alone clients but they do not show up on the WSUS server console.
Below are Update
logs from a stand alone client and what I think is the matching entry from
the servers log.
Any help would be appreciated.

Boskoe,
Sound like group policy issue. Double check Windows Update Intranet server
name and port. By default Wus installs on either port 80 or 8530. You may
have to add http://wusservername:8530 in GPO. After making appropriate
changes in GPO either wait for 15 mins for GPO to refresh or run gpudate.exe
from client pc to apply in changed GP.

If everything looks good on the GP, there are some APIs you can use to
troubleshoot. here is the lin
http://www.microsoft.com/windowsserversystem/updateservices/downloads/default.mspx

Hints: Sample and tools have API to manually add PCs to WUS. manually adding
computers may not solve the communcation issue between client and server
though.

If you are using Ghost images on your workstations and didn't run Sysprep you
will get only some of your machines showing up in WSUS console. The server
sees the machines as the same machine because the SID's are the same. You
will need to change the SID with a SID generator. We use one from
sysinternals http://www.sysinternals.com/Utilities/NewSid.html

If you are using Ghost images on your workstations and didn't run Sysprep you
will get only some of your machines showing up in WSUS console. The server
sees the machines as the same machine because the SID's are the same. You
will need to change the SID with a SID generator. We use one from
sysinternals http://www.sysinternals.com/Utilities/NewSid.html
Hi,

WSUS doesn't use the machine SID to identify a client, it creates the
registry value SusClientId and uses it's data value.

If a source computer for an image is connected to a WSUS server, before
you create the image, to avoid problems, you must under the registry key
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\WindowsUpdate

delete the following values before creating the image:

AccountDomainSid
PingID
SusClientId

I tried that and it didn't work. I tried a lot of differnet things. The only
thing that has worked is creating new SID's for the machines. The other weird
thing is that it only happens to XP machines. 2000 Pro machines populate just
fine. Our Ghost images were creaeted before we even had a SUS server much
less a WSUS server. I can't explain why it works it just does. One thought I
have had is that it deals with the way MS has started asking to verify your
OS before AutoUpdates will work. That is the only reason I can think of that
I am getting this behavior.

The reason creating a new SID for the machine works is because the WUA
monitors the client's AccountDomainSID (thus the reason for that value being
duplicated in the ~\CurrentVersion\WindowsUpdate key. When the WUA sees that
it's cached copy of the AccountDomainSID no longer matches the system's
actual AccountDomainSID, WUA regenerates the SusClientID.

The same thing can be accomplished, albeit with less time and steps, by
simply deleting all three values stored in the
~\CurrentVersion\WindowsUpdate key, and then restarting the Automatic
Updates service. When the WUA initiates the next detection after the restart
of WUAUSERV, it will regenerate the SusClientId value.

Boskoe implies that none of the clients are showing up, yet the client cited
is running the latest version.

This is not likely a SusClientId issue or at least one client would appear,
and if all clients came from the same image, the name displayed on the WSUS
console would change from time to time, making it appear that clients were
coming and going.

Boskoe,
Sound like group policy issue. Double check Windows Update Intranet server
name and port. By default Wus installs on either port 80 or 8530. You may
have to add http://wusservername:8530 in GPO. After making appropriate
changes in GPO either wait for 15 mins for GPO to refresh or run gpudate.exe
from client pc to apply in changed GP.
If everything looks good on the GP, there are some APIs you can use to
troubleshoot. here is the link
http://www.microsoft.com/windowsserversystem/updateservices/downloads/default.mspx
Hints: Sample and tools have API to manually add PCs to WUS. manually adding
computers may not solve the communcation issue between client and server
though.

Agreed. My process for every workstation is to:

1) Go to the Microsoft Update page

2) Install all needed updates

3) Update GPO to activate AU

4) run "wuauclt /detectnow"

So far, it's worked 100% (as long as I type in the correct server name
;-> ). I can do this since I'm doing a gradual conversion and I only have
40+ workstations to update. I found that the WSUS update process gets the
users very annoyed when there are several reboots required and they keep
getting interrupted by the 5 minute warning.... this way, they start out
clean....

Good advice, Hank. I think it's probably better not to subject existing
workstations to mass updates from WSUS if at all possible. WSUS is better
implemented on an up-to-date environment, as it also allows for avoiding the
downloading and storing of "legacy" content.
