WSUS Clients not reporting status

Have 30 computers out of 300; mixed (2k sp4 & xp sp2) that are not reporting
their status. They contact everyday. I'm including part of the windowsupdate
log and the results from client diag test. I ran MBSA on those computers and
specified to scan against our wsus server. After the scans completed, the
computers reported their status. That was the only time they have reported
in. They are logging the same error message "Error: Agent failed detecting
with reason: 0x80072ee2"

I've read everything I can find on this error and have tried everything
offered.
verified machines can receive updates from ms site
disabled firewall on xp2 machines
cleaned temp ie files and removed proxy settings
pinged proxy server
removed client id in registry and ran wauclt /detectnow
reregistered dlls
rename softwaredistribution folder and removed datastore folder

Actually, it isreporting its status... it's just that the status being
reported is inaccurate, because the client is unable to successfully execute
a detection.

We see from the Client Diagnostic Tool that the CDT was able to connect to
the server, and verified the presence of the necessary files in the
selfupdate folder.

The message was malformed or incomplete

On 12/21, the client received a '400D' error.. the infamouse SOAP 0x12c
error, which, during the beta, was traced to a failure in the WMI subsystem.
This issue was supposed to have been fixed for the release code, but the
occasional recurrence of the issue suggests that it has not. Check this list
on the WSUS Wiki, and eliminate any issues that may be addressed:

0x80072ee2 - ERROR INTERNET TIMEOUT

Your documentation of things you tried says you removed the SusClientId and
reran the detection. Since the posted log segment shows no change in the
ClientID, I'm assuming that 'test' occurred prior to the time of this log.
When you removed the SusClientID from the registry, did you also remove the
other two values contained in the ~\CurrentVersion\WindowsUpdate key? After
removing the value(s), did you -restart- the Automatic Updates service?

Is there anything special, or unique, about these 30 systems, that's not the
case with the other 270? Because you have 270 of 300 systems working, logic
dictates that the problem is on the client-side; however, with that many
clients malfunctioning, it also suggests that the problem is not a quirk
with the config of one client, but perhaps something systemic.

Also, try the following, in this order:
1. Stop the Automatic Updates service.
2. Delete the registry key
HKLM\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\WindowsUpdate in its
entirety.
3. Delete the registry key
HKLM\Software\Policies\Microsoft\Windows\WindowsUpdate in its entirety.
4. Run 'gpupdate /force /target:computer' to reload the registry from the
applicable Group Policy.
5. Export the registry key
HKLM\Software\Policies\Microsoft\Windows\WindowsUpdate and post it here.
6. Delete the %windir%\SoftwareDistribution folder (again).
7. Rename the %windir%\WindowsUpdate.log (do not delete it, we may need
what's there for additional diagnostics information)
8. Restart the Automatic Updates service.

WAIT 30 MINUTES.

9. Post the complete %windir%\WindowsUpdate.log along with the registry
export from step #5.

Have 30 computers out of 300; mixed (2k sp4 & xp sp2) that are not reporting
their status. They contact everyday. I'm including part of the windowsupdate
log and the results from client diag test. I ran MBSA on those computers and
specified to scan against our wsus server. After the scans completed, the
computers reported their status. That was the only time they have reported
in. They are logging the same error message "Error: Agent failed detecting
with reason: 0x80072ee2"

Thanks for replying. The only thing these computers have in common is that
they connect back to the wsus server via a wireless connection. I thought
that might be the problem, but we have another 50 computers that also connect
via wireless that have no problem. The problem started after we migrated from
sus to wsus.
I ran the wbemtest and was able to make a connection; however I haven't used
this program, so I don't know the syntax to run a query.
I have deleted the registry keys and distribution folder. Here is the new
registry settings and log after restarting wuauserv. Also the client has
shown up in the
unassigned computers with a status of unknown. All of these computers kept
their unknown status until I ran MBSA against them.

Actually, it isreporting its status... it's just that the status being
reported is inaccurate, because the client is unable to successfully execute
a detection.
We see from the Client Diagnostic Tool that the CDT was able to connect to
the server, and verified the presence of the necessary files in the
selfupdate folder.

There have been a lot of things going on with this machine, and knowing the
time line of changes that were made, so I can understand how they fit into
the anomalies in this log, would be helpful.

0x8024400d - SUS E PT SOAP CLIENT
The message was malformed or incomplete
On 12/21, the client received a '400D' error.. the infamouse SOAP 0x12c
error, which, during the beta, was traced to a failure in the WMI subsystem.
This issue was supposed to have been fixed for the release code, but the
occasional recurrence of the issue suggests that it has not. Check this list

Here we see the MBSA scan, which actually was able to connect to the
client.asmx webservice. It complained about some issues in the process.
Nevertheless, it did detect four updates.

At 2:30am, the client initiated another detection cycle, and this time, logs
the '2ee2' error attempting to access the wusetup.cab file.

0x80072ee2 - ERROR INTERNET TIMEOUT
Your documentation of things you tried says you removed the SusClientId and
reran the detection. Since the posted log segment shows no change in the
ClientID, I'm assuming that 'test' occurred prior to the time of this log.
When you removed the SusClientID from the registry, did you also remove the
other two values contained in the ~\CurrentVersion\WindowsUpdate key? After
removing the value(s), did you -restart- the Automatic Updates service?
Is there anything special, or unique, about these 30 systems, that's not the
case with the other 270? Because you have 270 of 300 systems working, logic
dictates that the problem is on the client-side; however, with that many
clients malfunctioning, it also suggests that the problem is not a quirk
with the config of one client, but perhaps something systemic.
1. Stop the Automatic Updates service.
2. Delete the registry key
HKLM\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\WindowsUpdate in its
entirety.
3. Delete the registry key
HKLM\Software\Policies\Microsoft\Windows\WindowsUpdate in its entirety.
4. Run 'gpupdate /force /target:computer' to reload the registry from the
applicable Group Policy.
5. Export the registry key
HKLM\Software\Policies\Microsoft\Windows\WindowsUpdate and post it here.
6. Delete the %windir%\SoftwareDistribution folder (again).
7. Rename the %windir%\WindowsUpdate.log (do not delete it, we may need
what's there for additional diagnostics information)
8. Restart the Automatic Updates service.
WAIT 30 MINUTES.
9. Post the complete %windir%\WindowsUpdate.log along with the registry
export from step #5.

THAT would be a significant contributing factor, Jamer. We've seen several
instances of issues with data communication between the WUA and the WSUS
server where wireless connections are involved.

Wireless connections have a lot of variability and volatility. What works on
computer 'a' at point 'a', may not work correctly on computer 'b' at point
'b', even if point 'b' is a mere few feet away from point 'a'.

For example, how many WAPs are available to support those 50 computers; how
much space (square footage, cubic footage) is serviced by each WAP. What
physical environment exists between these clients and the nearest WAP. How
far is it from this particular client to the nearest WAP, and how many
clients are being serviced by that WAP. Of these 30 dysfunctional clients,
how many WAPs are involved that provide service to them. Do you have any
WAPs that have 100% of the serviced clients working perfectly?

Yes.. the architecture of SUS and WSUS are radically different. It is not
practical to compare performance issues based merely on the switch from one
product to the next. The architecture of WSUS, using web services is much
more sensitive to connectivity issues that the old technology of SUS.

I would suggest putting one of these computers on a -wired- connection. If
you can replicate this error on a wired connection, with no other changes to
the client, then I'll abandon the consideration that the issue is wireless
based, and we can continue troubleshooting the issue while the client is on
the wire.

the '2ee2' error attempting to access the wusetup.cab file.

Your documentation of things you tried says you removed the SusClientId and
reran the detection. Since the posted log segment shows no change in the
ClientID, I'm assuming that 'test' occurred prior to the time of this log.
When you removed the SusClientID from the registry, did you also remove the
other two values contained in the ~\CurrentVersion\WindowsUpdate key? After
removing the value(s), did you -restart- the Automatic Updates service?
Is there anything special, or unique, about these 30 systems, that's not the
case with the other 270? Because you have 270 of 300 systems working, logic
dictates that the problem is on the client-side; however, with that many
clients malfunctioning, it also suggests that the problem is not a quirk
with the config of one client, but perhaps something systemic.
1. Stop the Automatic Updates service.
2. Delete the registry key
HKLM\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\WindowsUpdate in its
entirety.
3. Delete the registry key
HKLM\Software\Policies\Microsoft\Windows\WindowsUpdate in its entirety.
4. Run 'gpupdate /force /target:computer' to reload the registry from the
applicable Group Policy.
5. Export the registry key
HKLM\Software\Policies\Microsoft\Windows\WindowsUpdate and post it here.
6. Delete the %windir%\SoftwareDistribution folder (again).
7. Rename the %windir%\WindowsUpdate.log (do not delete it, we may need
what's there for additional diagnostics information)
8. Restart the Automatic Updates service.
WAIT 30 MINUTES.
9. Post the complete %windir%\WindowsUpdate.log along with the registry
export from step #5.

I guess I should have been more specific. We are using a wireless connection
as our wan link, all of our computers connect normally thru lan interfaces.
But you are right about causing problems making the connection. Your last
post got me to thinking about the wireless, and on a whim I changed the mtu
on a couple of the computers and viola, they are communicating properly. I
still need to check and make sure they download and install their updates.
I've got my fingers crossed. Thanks for all of you help

they connect back to the wsus server via a wireless connection.

THAT would be a significant contributing factor, Jamer. We've seen several
instances of issues with data communication between the WUA and the WSUS
server where wireless connections are involved.

Wireless connections have a lot of variability and volatility. What works on
computer 'a' at point 'a', may not work correctly on computer 'b' at point
'b', even if point 'b' is a mere few feet away from point 'a'.
For example, how many WAPs are available to support those 50 computers; how
much space (square footage, cubic footage) is serviced by each WAP. What
physical environment exists between these clients and the nearest WAP. How
far is it from this particular client to the nearest WAP, and how many
clients are being serviced by that WAP. Of these 30 dysfunctional clients,
how many WAPs are involved that provide service to them. Do you have any
WAPs that have 100% of the serviced clients working perfectly?

The problem started after we migrated from sus to wsus.

Yes.. the architecture of SUS and WSUS are radically different. It is not
practical to compare performance issues based merely on the switch from one
product to the next. The architecture of WSUS, using web services is much
more sensitive to connectivity issues that the old technology of SUS.
I would suggest putting one of these computers on a -wired- connection. If
you can replicate this error on a wired connection, with no other changes to
the client, then I'll abandon the consideration that the issue is wireless
based, and we can continue troubleshooting the issue while the client is on
the wire.

There have been a lot of things going on with this machine, and knowing the
time line of changes that were made, so I can understand how they fit into
the anomalies in this log, would be helpful.

I was wondering what solutions are available other than adjusting the mtu. I
have to adjust the settings to 1300, which to me seems too low.
