(too old to reply)

Our SUS server does not see clients in 'Computers' from the web based
configuration. It appears as though my machine had contacted the server
though. I have also verified with the client tool that there were no issues
with the client (and there were none).

Below is my log...

The client thinks it's talking to a /SUS/ server, not a /WSUS/ server.

Perchance you've installed /WSUS/ on port 8530, but left the port number off
of the URL?

Well, I was able to get my Windows 2000 machines to respond. However,
something odd occurs with Windows XP. Even though I have the latest version
of the WU client, (according to the log). I go to update.microsoft.com, and i
am able to click on the right side and get the other WU that allows me to get
updates for office, etc...

Is there a downloadable for this? Even though we only have maybe 20 or so
Windows XP computers in our environment, it would kill me having to manually
go to that website ...and get the other WU.

I DID try downloading the wu agent, and installing it on Windows XP, but it
would not install. It gave me some sort of error to the likes of I already
had the latest version.

Thanks for the suggestions! (I am using port 8530 btw).

The client thinks it's talking to a /SUS/ server, not a /WSUS/ server.

Perchance you've installed /WSUS/ on port 8530, but left the port number off
of the URL?
It appears that my Windows 2000 machines are fine, but my Windows XP ones are
still having issues. Any ideas?

Our SUS server does not see clients in 'Computers' from the web based
configuration. It appears as though my machine had contacted the server
though. I have also verified with the client tool that there were no issues
with the client (and there were none).

My clients have wsus client install and don't see clients in console wsus
server too
This message in log file IIS: Windows-Update-Agent 500
Post by eolson

Below is my log...

I have been messing with every possible setting to make my clients show up in
the computers view and have been unsuccessful I am getting very upset with
this and it looks like many other people too. I cannot believe Microsoft has
created such a mess with this WSUKS application.

My clients have wsus client install and don't see clients in console wsus
server too
This message in log file IIS: Windows-Update-Agent 500
Post by eolson
Post by Lawrence Garvin
The client thinks it's talking to a /SUS/ server, not a /WSUS/ server.

Perchance you've installed /WSUS/ on port 8530, but left the port number off
of the URL?
It appears that my Windows 2000 machines are fine, but my Windows
XP ones
are
still having issues. Any ideas?
Post by eolson
Our SUS server does not see clients in 'Computers' from the web based
configuration. It appears as though my machine had contacted the server
though. I have also verified with the client tool that there were
no
issues
with the client (and there were none).
Below is my log...

I have a standard WSUS installation on port 80 and have exactly the sam
problem. Clients hardly ever show up in WSUSadmin, even though they ar
on W2K SP4 and have the WSUS client. As soon as I launc
http://update.microsoft.com/microsoftupdate (not Windows or Offic
update!) using the client's web browser and proceed through whateve
client-side application is being installed there then I have n
problems and see the client within minutes!

Questions:
1. What's being installed?
2. Is whatever is being installed available as a stand-alon
download?
3. Can the problem be addressed without visiting every client an
going through this web site-based install process?

Thanks for any tips!!!

Hi,

See if installing the Windows Update Agent using the standalone
installer solves the problem.

Download location for WindowsUpdateAgent20-x86.exe

What's odd, is when you try to run that Windows Update Agent, you recieve the
following:

Install is not needed since Windows Update Agent is already installed.

So, you then proceed to visit: http://update.microsoft, and in the right
hand corner of IE, you get this message:

Upgrade to Microsoft Update. Automatically recieve updates for Windows,
Office and more.

Clicking on that link, takes you to another site, which then UPDATES your
Microsoft Update. Then going back to http://update.microsoft.com gives you
another dialog:

Software Upgrade for some Windows Components Required.

This then proceeds to install Windows Installer 3.1, and the Genuine
Advantage app ...which requires a reboot.

After all of this, THEN my Windows 2000 machines begin to connect to the
WSUS server.

This is unacceptable. I'm going to put in a call with Microsoft Tech support
now (I'm an Enterprise Customer).
