I've installed windows server update on a 2003 box and it appears to have
installed fine and it seems to be working fine.. an pushing out updates.
But i have three servers that aren't showing up on the Wsus server and when
i added a new machine to the nextwork the same thing happened.

Anyone have any ideas as to why these computer are not showing up on my wsus
server. when the rest do. ???

Thanks for any help you can give..

Are the servers in a separate OU that you've not linked a GPO into?

If not, then let's start by running the Client Diagnostic Tool on one of those
servers to see what's configured and what's working and what's not.

The Client Diagnostic Tool said that everything passed, but the computer is
still not showing up in the Computers list in WSUSAdmin. Any other ideas?

WSUS

----------------------------------------------------------------------------
I wouldn't worry about that line, it just means that since the GPO called
WSUS is set for computer settings, it doesn't apply to user settings, so it
is filtered out.

Hmm - how did you deploy these machines? Are they cloned? Do the computers
receive any updates at all, and the problem is just that they do not appear
in the WSUS admin console?

You might want to post a windowsupdate.log file from one of them...

Thanks!

Yes.. please /post/ the results from the CDT.

No offense intended, but I've seen numerous reports thta "everything passed",
when, in fact, the CDT provides clear evidence of a misconfiguration --
interpreting the answers from the CDT is a bit more complex than just looking
for errors.

Samuel and Gavin,

I have run into a similar problem that seems to be related to the length of
the computer name. Examples below:

Example 1 [These machines are servers]

Machine Name USIVSWTSD08-DV This machine shows up in computer list
Machine Name USIVSWTSW08-DV This machine did not show up

If I remove the first machine [USIVSWTSD08-DV] the second machine will now
show up.

Example 2 [These machines are workstations]

Machine Name WXPKZD3GN01 This machine shows up in computer list
Machine Name WXPKZD3GN05 This machine did not show up

If I remove the first machine [WXPKZD3GN01] the second machine will now show
up.

There appears to be a problem with computer names where the first 8 digits
are the same.

Does anyone know how to fix this????

I'd be more inclined to think that you're getting manifestations of duplicated
SusClientId values from these machines, than there is an issue with only
matching the first eight characters of a machine name.

Can you please check this registry value on each of the four machines and
confirm that it is unique:

HKLM\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\WindowsUpdate
"SusClientID"=
