With a replica server, you configure the URL of the upstream server at the
time of installation, and this cannot be changed.
With an autonomous downstream server, you can configure the URL of the
upstream server, including switching back to using Microsoft.com, at will.
If you've been able to change these parameters without reinstalling, then
you do not have a replica server configured, you have an autonomous
downstream server. On the other hand, the disabling of certain options, like
"Update Files and Languages" is indicative of a replica server, since these
options can only be configured at the master server.
You've also previously stated that the Products and Classifications options
are grayed out, also suggesting that you installed this server as a replica
server.
Since you set this machine up six months ago, and you seem confused about
how you configured it, my recommendation would be to /reinstall/ the machine
and /document/ how you configure it.
Post by RollNpcchecking settings... on my wsus production server the wsus test server is
specified as the upstream server under update source on the sync options
page. you feel that my server is a replica server, could this be possible
with this setting specified? you also say that replica serrver is configured
only during installation.... since i installed the server over 6 months ago
and this just happened within the last few weeks, that does not make sence.
anther option that i jsut discovered is now grayed out is the very last
setting. "Update files and Languages"
I dont understand how your answer could be the answer to my problem. if i
had jsut set this box up i could totally understand it is a configureation
error, but this is an old machine, i setup and configured it over 6 months
ago and there has been no major changes, other than microsofts own updates,
since.

Post by Lawrence Garvin (MVP)The question is not whether you set up as a 'downstream' server, but rather
what TYPE of downstream server.
You can have a /replica/ server downstream -- which is configured at
installation, and can only be changed by reinstalling the software.
Or you can have an /autonomous/ server downstream -- which is configured by
entering the URL of the upstream internal WSUS server on the
Synchronization
Options page of the /autonomous/ downstream server.
Post by RollNpcI definatly set up as a downstream server. this is new, the grayed out
options just showed up when somethng new was added to wsus. the test box
shows definitions as a new option. the production box says there is new
options but i cant review them since it is now grayed out.

Post by Lawrence Garvin (MVP)Sounds like you configured your production box as a REPLICA server...
rather than as an autonomous, downstream server.
If this is the case, the only way to 'undo' this is to reinstall the
production server.
Review the sections in the WSUS Deployment Guide that describe the
differences between replica servers and autonomous servers.
Post by RollNpcI have two wsus boxes, a test box and a production box.
both are identical in hardware and software running windows 2003
server
and
WSUS only. My test box connects to Microsoft for updates and the Production
box connects to the test box.
The test box, under options, synchronization options, Products and
Classifications, i can view and make changes... However on the
Production
box
the Products and Classifications section is completely grayed out
and i
cant
see or configure it. This is new, i did configure it in the past,
but
there
we just got some new products and classifications that i want to
add...
Any
ideas?
