Discussion:
WSUS 3.0: MMC Could Not Create Snap-In
(too old to reply)

Has anyone else encountered the following error when trying to load the WSUS MMC snap-in?

"MMC could not create the snap-in. The snap-in might not have been installed correctly.

Name: Update Services

CLSID: FX: {8b6499ed-0241-e032-6508-da4b1c879d7e}"

Any ideas?

I've searched the newsgroup (and the interwebs) and the only thing I've been able to find on this is a recommendation to just re-install Windows Server 2003. That's, unfortunately, out of the question.

Many thanks!

I neglected to mention that the snap-in has been working fine until some time recently. We installed it this past summer and it worked okay for several months.

Yes, we have the exact issue with just clicking cancel rather than ending it allows it to appear in the end. This is indeed a new thing after the system was working for a while here too. never mind, I'm sure Microsoft will fix it shortly by pushing out a forced upgrade to WSUS 4 for us, disguised as an IE7 critical hotfix no doubt...

I'm having the same problem here. This just started yesterday I beleive.
I'm not sure whats causing it either but I do as Mr. Moir mentioned and click
cancel instead of end now and it still brings up the snap-in. This is on my
local XP Workstation, I'm not having this problem if I connect to the snap-in
on the server.

J/Robert,

Forgive my ignorance but where are you getting the "Cancel/End Now" options.
Right now, I have a shortcut to the WSUS snap-in placed on the desktop of
the WSUS server. I open that and I get the "unable to load snap-in"
message. At this point I have no options to click. I can also try to
manually add the snap-in to a new MMC window and I get a message stating it
"cannot initialize the snap-in" with an OK button and nothing else.

I also tried removing the Docs & Settings file you mentioned but that didn't
work either. If I know where to click Cancel, I gladly will. ;-)

Thanks for your help, both of you!

I have fixed my issues with the "MMC Could not Create Snap-in" First I
closed out of the MMC & Then I went into C:\Documents & Settings\my
profile\application data\MMC and deleted the WSUS file.
Once you delete this file you will have to recreate your Update Views but
that only took me a few seconds to do and when I reopend the admin console I
did not get the MMC Snapin error~

Unfortunately this didn't fix the issue either. Tried it about a month ago
and I just tried it again now. Any other suggestions? Also, there was
apparently a WSUS UI issue released a couple of weeks ago
(http://blogs.technet.com/wsus/archive/2007/11/13/unexpected-ui-errors-in-wsus.aspx)
but that didn't work either.

Any other suggestions out there?

Thanks!
