Running WSUS 3 SP1 on SBS 2003 Premium SP1. Clients are WinXP Pro SP2/SP3 (a
mix).

I just installed WSUS on the SBS server, per the instructions from MS unique
to SBS. CLients are showing up, but the Change Group Membership menu item
is greyed out. (I created 3 groups in the WSUS Console: Servers,
Workstations, and Laptops)

I created a GPO named WSUS with the following set to Enabled:

Configure Automatic Updates (selected "4 Auto download and schedule...)
Specify intranet Microsoft update server location (http://<servername>:8530
in both places)
No auto-restart with logged on users for scheduled ...
Automatic updates detection frequency (every 12 hours)
Allow Automatic Updates immediate installation
Enabling Windows Update Power Management ...

All else is left at Not Configured"

How can I enable the Change Group Membership menu item?

Running WSUS 3 SP1 on SBS 2003 Premium SP1.
Need a bit more detail.

What -version- of SBS? SBS SP1? SBS R2?

Was WSUS 2.0 SP1 from the R2 Technologies previously installed on this
machine?

Did you upgrade from WSUS 2.0 SP1 (R2 Technologies) to WSUS 3.0 SP1,
or did you install WSUS 3.0 SP1 on an SBS 2003 SP1 system?

Servers, Workstations, and Laptops)
The "Change Group Membership" item is greyed out because you've chosen the
option to use Client-Side Targeting, which is configured via Group Policy --
an appropriate configuration in an SBS environment.

This was set in Options | Computers (or more likely, during the setup
configuration wizard), and the option
"Use Group Policy or registry settings on computers" is selected, and
"Use the Update Services console" is unselected.

You need to set "Enable client-side Targeting" to ENABLED,
enter the appropriate Group name (Servers, Workstations, or Laptops),
and link that policy to the appropriate Organizational Unit.

You'll need to create at least three policies (one for each group: Servers,
Workstations, Laptops),
and link them to the appropriate Computer OUs containing Servers,
Workstations, and Laptops.

Or, you could *disable* "Client-Side Targeting" (via Options | Computers as
noted above), and manage group membership from the WSUS Admin Console.

Having reviewed the WSUS on SBS documentation for installing your WSUS
environment, I would now highly encourage you to also read the Deployment
Guide and the Operations Guide for the rest of the information necessary to
properly configure and administer your WSUS Server.

Version: SBS SP1.

WSUS 2.0 was NOT on the machine previously.

WSUS 3.0 w/SP1 was installed on the SBS SP1 machine.

I will try disabling the group policy option in WSUS console as I have
little experience with GP's; I don't know how to create the OU's or the
GPO's for them as you suggest. Rather than try by trial and error, I'll go
the simple route first.

Thanks.

Lawrence,
We have an issue that you might be able to help with. We have been using
the client targeting of WSUS 3sp1 now switched to the default of WSUS to
create more detailed groups. Now machines are not showing up. How can we
force this to update? Any registry or GP to put in place?
