WSUS - optional Drivers and WindowsUpdate.microsoft.com

I have my WSUS server set up to download all classifications, including
Drivers, and set them to approve as detect only.
I have a user which successfully detected all of the critical and security
patches. So I approved for install and the user installed successfully, and
the WSUS says there are no more updates to apply.
However, now when I go to Windows Update from IE on that user's machine, it
detects 4 optional hardware updates, including HP-Printer driver.
I filtered WSUS at UPDATES "DRIVERS only" and there are no HP-Printerdrivers.
Shouldn't the WSUS have also detected those four as an option?
PLEASE HELP ME! THANKS FOR ALL...

Those updates you see on WindowsUpdate.com.... are they listed on your WSUS
server??? (Probably not.)

WSUS clients can only detect Drivers that are available via WSUS.

Hy Lawrence
In WSUS there are no drivers for for example "HP Printer".
At windowsupdate.microsoft.com there are drivers...
Why is there a different between WSUS and Windowsupdate?
I think, it is almost the same service......

thx for reply...

There are no drivers for many hardwares, Stefan.

The "Drivers" portion of WSUS is fraught with many challenges, and for the
most part is much less mature than the rest of the process, partly because
it's brand new to this idea of automated patch management, and partly
because it involves cooperation with hardware vendors (as opposed to
Microsoft product updates which are all managed internally by MS).

The general consensus of those who tested the beta and RC is that "Drivers"
are not yet ready for prime time. Personally, I'm not using WSUS for any
driver updates. In addition, it's also been my observation that drivers
released through AU/WU/WSUS tend to be a generation or so older than the
latest versions available from the manufacturer website, because drivers
released through AU/WU/WSUS are required to pass WHQL certification and be
digitally signed. That whole process takes some time.

Also, in general, video drivers have been problematic from AU/WU, and I'd
recommend against installing video drivers at all via any remote or
automated system. On the other hand, I've had very good luck installing
network and sound drivers from AU/WU.

As for printer drivers.... for HP, I'd go straight to the HP website to get
HP drivers.

To answer your question.. Why are the services different... It has to do
with the packaging of drivers for automated distribution, and interaction
with the Windows Update Agent. When you go to WindowsUpdate.com, you (the
operator at the console) replace that "automated distribution" process, by
interacting directly with the WU site. Also, drivers need to be updatable
using WI or update.exe technology, as well as have metadata created for
WSUS, to be used in the WSUS environment.
